The Rise of Homo divergens
A newly configured human being may be emerging who is increasingly optimized for systems, data, and abstraction, perhaps at the cost of emotional immediacy and social intuition.
This cold be the fascinating plot of a great science fiction story. But that’s not the gist of my thoughts. It is an observation drawn from neuroscience, psychology, and cultural history. The rise of what is now called “neurodiversity” is often described as the mere discovery of hidden conditions. Could it be the first glimpse of an evolutionary divergence inside our own species? We are watching cognition evolve under the pressure of digital complexity.
From the beginning of Homo sapiens, people have always been cognitively varied. Some of us were storytellers, others were tool-makers, others blossomed as strategists. Yet until the modern era, survival depended on interpersonal attunement, which is the process of being present and responsive to another person’s inner and outer experience, creating a deep sense of connection and understanding. Empathy, cooperation, and shared myth were essential to keeping small groups cohesive. In such environments, social intuition, the ability to read faces, interpret motives, and sustain group emotion were an evolutionary advantage.
Is the modern world selecting
for a new balance of cognitive traits?
The industrial revolution helped reverse that hierarchy. Precision replaced persuasion as the key to success. The bureaucratic and technological revolutions of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries rewarded those who could think in systems and numbers rather than in stories. With the digital revolution of the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the pressure to adapt has intensified beyond anything our ancestors could imagine. My grandmother lived long enough to see horse and buggy replaced by the spaceship. Mere changes in mode of transportation. For us, every domain of modern life, from software engineering to finance to data science, revolves analytical cognition, error-intolerance, and rule-consistency over emotional nuance. These are enormous changes in the way we think and feel. The human race now heavily favors the mind that can understand, build, maintain, and utilize complex, self-consistent systems. The smartphone is an optimal example.
In this uberdigitized environment, people whose brains are naturally drawn to structure and pattern, often those labeled autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, or otherwise “neurodivergent,” are no longer marginal. They are becoming adaptive and in many cases, more successful. The digital environment rewards exactly the traits that older social ecologies penalized: deep hyper focus, narrow interest, sensitivity to error, preference for clarity over ambiguity. Is the modern world selecting for a new balance of cognitive traits?
In my parlance, Homo divergens is not a separate species in the genetic sense. I am not an anthropologist, so you will forgive me if I use the term rather loosely. I see it as a cognitive ecotype, i.e., a stable variation in brain configuration, sustained or perhaps induced by cultural and technological reinforcement. If Homo sapiens evolved for social coherence, could it be that Homo divergens thrives on informational coherence?
The differences are subtle but cumulative. The divergens brain appears to privilege consistency over ambiguity, data over gesture, and fairness over forgiveness. It values clarity and predictability more than emotional harmony. The result is a cognitive style ideally suited to a digital civilization, which as we all know by now is chock-full of algorithms, AI bots, online-only institutions, and fiber networks.
The most visible examples of Homo divergens perhaps already surround us: software architects, systems engineers, quantitative analysts, data scientists, and AI researchers. Yet this human variant may not be confined to any single occupation. It could be a planet-wide emerging mode of thought, increasingly normalized through education, technology, and media.
Take a look at the latest neuroimaging research. To me, its data support the existence of coherent cognitive styles across populations. Studies of the empathizing–systemizing balance by Baron-Cohen published in 2017 show stable neurobiological differences in network connectivity. Systemizers display heightened local connectivity and reduced global integration. In layman’s terms, these brains are wired for detail, precision, and rule consistency. I am not aware of any specific study, and I would like to know if this pattern, once associated only with autism, is distributed across the general population. Let me know in the comments.
What about genetics? Recent studies (I am thinking of Warrier et al., who published in 2018) show that empathy and systemizing each have hereditary components, and that they are influenced by polygenic combinations rather than single mutations. The traits cluster differently across individuals, suggesting a wide cognitive spectrum rather than a binary divide.

At the same time, sociocultural studies (by Henrich, in 2020; by Nisbett & Masuda, in 2021) show that human cultures that emphasize literacy, abstraction, and formal institutions produce more analytical and less contextual cognition. If a culture can reinforce neural tendencies across generations, then cognitive divergence can evolve without biological speciation, which is the evolutionary process by which a single ancestral species divides into two or more new, distinct species.
The result is a feedback loop: digital environments reward analytical cognition; individuals who excel within them shape new environments that further reinforce that cognition. Cultural evolution becomes neuroevolutionary by other means. Homo sapiens slowly give up power. Homo divergens slowly take their place.
If Homo divergens excels at pattern recognition, it may struggle with emotional interpretation. The shift is not toward lower empathy, but toward a different kind of empathy. The new human does not “feel with” as easily as the ancestral type; instead, we could say it “models” emotion cognitively, through explicit reasoning about what others feel. Through IQ, EQ is processed and understood. This style is efficient in structured settings, I use it in therapy, and I have used in my past management career, or in my leadership coaching work. I must use it judiciously, because it can appear cold or detached in informal interaction.
This divergence in empathy type, in my view, carries enormous social consequences. Communication between divergens and sapiens minds, in marriage and in the workplace, often breaks down not from malice but from mismatch. The “double empathy problem” describes how both neurotypes, the neurodivergent and the neurotypical, can misread each other’s intentions: the empathic mind sees rigidity; the analytical mind sees irrationality. Neither is correct, yet both are firmly convinced. Conflict ensues.
This latent tension, and its corollaries, now defines much of modern public life. Online debates, institutional policies, and workplace dynamics all bear the marks of cognitive polarization. The analytic mind seeks procedural fairness, rules, codes, transparency, while the empathic mind seeks relational fairness, understanding, forgiveness, and narrative. Each interprets the other’s morality as error. Look at the current political discourse—or lack thereof.

The Internet, and our woefully inadequate use of it, functions as a new selective landscape for the human brain. Algorithms reward vigilance, categorization, and system-maintenance, which are skills intrinsic to the divergens profile. By contrast, face-to-face social intelligence, long the engine of human success, is devalued. Who wants to make a phone call or meet for coffee, when a text will get the job done? Unfortunately, with digital media, its emotional ambiguity confuses people and slows throughput; but precision pleases machines and empowers bureaucracies. Guess who wins?
Read the new crop of job opening ads and course syllabi, and you will quickly discover that educational and professional systems increasingly select for these traits. Standardized testing, coding curricula, and bureaucratic compliance all favor rule-bound cognition. Children who think abstractly but feel less intuitively are told they are “gifted,” and prescribed Ritalin. Those who prioritize relational context are told to focus and diagnosed with ADHD. Over time, it seems to me that our modern institutions have become cognitive amplifiers. Is this process deliberate? I doubt it. Homo neanderthalensis didn’t intentionally die off. Neither will sapiens. Divergens may be arising from billions of individual interactions with technology and data. Yet I discern a direction that is unmistakable: a world optimized for and built by it.
If the divergens mind gains cultural dominance, the texture of public life may change. The DMV may grow even more procedural. We have already seen oral language shifts from virtue to safety, from compassion to compliance, from grammatically to politically correct. Policies multiply; compassion declines. The same moral literalism that once drove Puritanism, a phenomenon that is repeated in the current “woke religion,” and later bureaucratic rationalism, now is taking a full digital form. The empathic imagination that once held communities together weakens under the weight of rule-consistency and correctness.
I am not sure I understand it and I may over- or underestimating. Nonetheless, a society led by Homo divergens may achieve extraordinary efficiency, scientific rigor, and algorithmic governance (think Orwell’s 1984). It may also lead us into moral desiccation, a fancy word for what Max Weber called the “iron cage of rationality.” The danger is not only tyranny but also sterility: a culture unable to tolerate ambiguity or dissent because its cognitive norms demand unfailing and uberconsistent precision.
I want to close on a positive note. This homo novus could be the cognitive type best equipped to guide humanity through the age of artificial intelligence. Machines become more analytical and rule-based? Voilà, the divergens mind is uniquely positioned to understand and align them. Out of economic or political necessity, we may need to embrace the very traits that complicate social interaction, because they may enable safe AI governance, climate modeling, and global coordination.
In the end, Homo divergens may not prevail, and simply coexist with Homo sapiens. My final question is this: can cognitive pluralism be sustained without devolving into mutual incomprehension? An AI-driven war may be a very messy and deadly affair.
